understanding white space
graphic communication design?
In the context of graphic design, my understanding of white space is any white medium that isn't filled with anything. This could be an intentional or non intentional white space but i think that every white space has the potential to evoke a feeling within an individual. For example in graphic communication - white space could evoke a feeling of cleanliness or simplicity for one individual but might imply discomfort or emptiness for another person. It is also a contrast that can make other things stand out for example text on a page or a border around a photo. I think the main intent of this is to draw the reader's eye to the main focus of the page, since a white page is considered a blank page that needs to be filled with something to serve it's purpose, although others might disagree. Negative space is another example of how white space can be used as a juxtaposition or a contrast to help build an image or graphic.
to create contrast
One example of white space in film that instantly comes to mind...
might simply be black and white film, before a time where colour film was around. Working in tandem with a spectrum of black and greys white space is a key aspect of the film since without it, the contrast wouldn't exist and the images would not be formed. However this a very literal understanding of white space in film.

examples of white space being used in film can be a very broad sector.
comments on the Bauhaus Manifesto
Walter Gropius was a...
German architect who founded the Bauhaus School in 1919. In terms of modern architecture, Gropius was one of the leaders of the movement along with others like Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier. After becoming the master of the Grand Ducal Saxon School of Art and Crafts, he transformed the academy into the world famous Bauhaus school which many other influential artists studies. Gropius' principle with Bauhaus was extending beauty and quality to every home with well designed and industrially produced products.
Gropius' manifesto starts off with the very bold and enthusiastic statement "The ultimate goal of all art is the building!" and how he wishes to remove the barrier between artists and artisans, uniting them together. Being an artist by profession according to Gropius is non existent as artist's must return to craftmanship and with those skills applied more "excellence" can be achieved. He urges artists architects and sculptors to go back to craftsmanship and to my understanding this is meant to be a more efficient way of creativity. Through this manifesto it explains Gropius' intentions with Bauhaus in terms of producing high quality products in the modern home, highlighting his importance for artists to take up craftsmanship and apply this to their work. Since Bauhaus was literally referred to as the "school of building" the Bauhaus movement proposed to combine fine arts, crafts and architecture into a design philosophy. Minimalism was key, and removed the ornamental design quality that had dominated in the past instead focusing on immaculate technique. This meant the lack of detail made Bauhaus products and designs more affordable and suitable for the everyman, eliminating class divide.
comments and research on The Laws of Sculptors, Gilbert & George
A collaborative art duo...
who are well known for their distinctive, highly formal appearance and their brightly coloured graphic artworks. After Gilbert moved from northern Italy to England, he met George when the two were studying a sculpture at Saint Martin's School of art in 1967. They fell in love and later married where they currently reside in East London. Their "anti elitist" approach to art meant that they always aimed to be relevant beyond the confines of the art world, and so they name their art pieces "sculptures" even though they use a variety of mediums. Their works have been subject to controversy as some included shocking depictions of sexual acts, nudity, bodily fluids and offensive slurs.
The Gilbert and George manifesto consists of only four rules. "Always be smartly dressed, well groomed, relaxed, friendly, polite and in complete control." is rule number one giving it a bit of importance over the others simply based of hierarchy. The idea of good behavior and smart form are typical of their morals and outward reputation, as they clearly value a formal appearance and demeanor. Making the world "believe in you" seems to place value in self worth and understanding that your mere existence is a privilege to the world which explains the next rule of "never worry assess, discuss or criticize but remain quiet, respectful and calm." The last rule of the manifesto seems less literal than the others, with the idea of leaving your bench maybe relating to giving up on your ideas or not believing the pathway that you have chosen. Overall this manifesto seems very based around self care and self confidence, which is a refreshing approach as it feels more personal and sincere to the people it will be communicating to.
comments and research on Riot Grrrl manifesto
The underground feminist punk movement...
that started in the early 1990's in Washington state. Punk style and politics are combined with feminist ideologies to create this main contributor to 3rd wave feminism. Some believe that Riot Grrrl originated from indie rock, with the punk scene also serving as inspiration for a musical movement where women get to express themselves as men have been doing all throughout history. The bands that came from this culture often touch on feminine topics such as sexuality, racism and patriarchy white also some taboo issues such as abuse with an overall aim to empower women through their music and messages. A DIY ethic is strong in Riot Grrrl subculture with independent zines, local meetings and activism being the main way of communication.
This manifesto uses repetitive capitalized words to obviously catch the eye of the reader and draw attention to the key parts of the message. "BECAUSE" being at the beginning at every paragraph highlights the fact that there is a reason for every word uttered. Every paragraph addresses a new issue and topic some even with satire worked in there "Instant Macho Gun Revolution" being an example or profanities such as "bullshit" further enforcing the "riot" and rebellious ethic of the subculture, and how women will express themselves how they please. The ideas of female empowerment come through clearly in this manifesto and wanting to create a sense of community for young women, disrupting the "status quo" and ignoring the patriarchal industries attempts to criticize women's creative expression: "BECAUSE we are angry at a society that tells us Girl = Dumb, Girl = Bad, Girl = Weak." In conclusion this manifesto throughout is extremely bold and certainly doesn't care to be polite in anyway.
